Have you ever accidentally dropped something important in the water, from a boardwalk or a boat perhaps, or even on a dive? There are methods to search underwater for objects that increase your chances of success. And there are more effective ways to bring up different sized or just plain awkward items. Search and recovery can be fun and challenging at the same time. Information gathering then carefully planning a search are the critical first steps that you'll learn.

During your programme you'll go on 4 open water dives, which are conducted over at least a 2-day period, with time being equally divided between academic and actual water-training sessions. Topics covered include:

  • The planning, organisation, procedures, problems, and hazards of search and recovery diving;
  • Limited-visibility diving and underwater navigation techniques;
  • Proper techniques and safety considerations for object location, including the use of various search patterns, lines and reels;
  • Proper techniques and safety considerations for recovery of objects using various lifting devices for large or heavy objects, plus other recovery methods.

To begin this course, you need to be a PADI (Junior) Advanced Open Water Diver and at least 12 years old, or a PADI Open Water Diver with a PADI Underwater Navigator Specialty certification. The elective search and recovery dive conducted during the Adventures In Diving programme may count toward this specialty. You'll need a standard set of scuba equipment, a compass and underwater slate, plus marker buoys, a line and reel.
